An air-to-water heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air and uses it to warm the water circulating through radiators or underfloor heating. Depending on the selected configuration, it can also produce domestic hot water.

For consistent operation, the unit must cover the building’s heating requirements without being unnecessarily oversized. The water temperature required by the heat emitters directly affects efficiency and electricity consumption.

Our method: we start with the building’s heat loss, then check the output of the heat emitters, flow temperature, domestic hot water requirements, the unit’s modulation range and any backup heating required.

Older homes and radiators: we check compatibility before installation

Underfloor heating is not essential. Existing radiators can be retained when they deliver enough heat at a water temperature compatible with the heat pump.

The presence of radiators alone neither confirms nor rules out the project. We compare each room’s heating demand with the actual output of its emitters and identify any useful adaptations before you commit.

A direct installation may be possible if…

A quotation for the complete installation, not just the unit

The price of an air-to-water heat pump depends on the heating demand, required output, hot water production, existing pipework, electrical adaptations, equipment location and the heating system to be removed. An estimate based solely on the home’s floor area would be too imprecise.

2026 heat pump grants

We check which Klimabonus grants apply to your project

In 2026, an air-to-water heat pump installed in an existing single-family house may qualify for a basic grant of €10,000 when it replaces a fossil-fuel boiler or direct electric heating, or €6,000 without this replacement. A temporary additional grant of €2,000 may apply to eligible projects ordered during the specified period.

  • Up to €12,000 for an existing single-family house when a fossil-fuel boiler or direct electric heating system is replaced at the same time.
  • Up to €8,000 for an existing single-family house without the replacement required for the higher grant level.
  • €3,000 for an air-to-water heat pump in a new single-family house. The temporary additional grant applies to existing buildings.
  • 50% of actual costs, capped at €2,000, to adapt the heat distribution system in a single-family house, plus €1,500 for the removal or neutralisation of an oil tank, subject to conditions.

Technical eligibility: the air-to-water heat pump must achieve a COP of at least 3.1 at A7/W35. The project must also comply with electrical and thermal metering, hydraulic balancing and acoustic requirements. In an existing building, a buffer tank of at least 30 litres per kW of thermal output is required unless the heat pump is modulating. We check these points when designing the installation.

Key dates: the additional €2,000 grant applies to eligible heat pumps installed in an existing residential building and ordered between 1st January 2026 and 30 June 2027. Pre-financing is scheduled to begin on 1st January 2027. It will remain optional and will not increase the amount of the grant.

What is the difference between an air-to-water and an air-to-air heat pump?

An air-to-water heat pump heats the water in a central heating circuit and can supply radiators, underfloor heating and domestic hot water, depending on the configuration. An air-to-air heat pump heats or cools room air directly through indoor units; it does not replace a wet central heating system in the same way.

How does an air-to-water heat pump work?

It captures heat from the outdoor air, raises its temperature through a refrigerant circuit and transfers this energy to the heating water. Its efficiency depends in particular on the outdoor temperature and the water temperature required by the building.

Can a heat pump be installed in an older home with radiators?

Yes, in some buildings, but an assessment is essential. Ecoclima analyses heat loss, the required water temperature and radiator output. The project may be feasible without changes, with selected radiators adapted, or after certain improvements to the building.

How does Ecoclima select the heat pump output?

How long does it take to install a heat pump?

The installation time depends on the heating system being replaced, hydraulic modifications, domestic hot water, radiators, electrical work and site access. The schedule provided by Ecoclima also allows for preparation, commissioning and inspection.

Can a heat pump be combined with solar panels?

Yes. Solar PV can cover part of the electricity used by the heat pump, but the two profiles do not always coincide: solar production is higher in summer, while heating demand is concentrated in winter. Ecoclima assesses both systems together to avoid sizing them around unrealistic self-consumption assumptions.
