With older systems, partial shading on just one panel can drastically reduce the output of the entire array. In our example, production drops from 4500W to 1140W – 75% loss. These devices monitor and adjust the voltage and current of each individual panel in real time, extracting the maximum possible power, even when partially shaded. While the total output might be similar to bypass diode systems, optimizers can offer slight gains in more challenging shading scenarios.

Are power optimizers really worth it?

Bypass diodes work great when shading is heavy and localized, like a chimney shadow blocking part of the panel. But what about light or scattered shading? If only 10% of a panel is shaded—or if the shade comes from a few tree leaves spread across the surface bypass diodes might not activate. In these cases, the panel’s output drops, and the string’s performance suffers.

Power optimizers shine in these situations. They respond intelligently to all kinds of shading—partial, irregular, or changing throughout the day and ensure each panel performs at its best without dragging down the rest of the system.
